“I literally wrote the words to this song on a rooftop in Brooklyn,” says Versus The World singer/guitarist Donald Spence. “I was visiting some friends in New York and we were passing around bottles, and catching up on some years we’d missed out on. I think everyone has people in their lives that they love, but time or distance, life in general really, has taken you to different places. It’s just important to remember that the only currency relationships really run on is time spent. So it’s a song about catching up. One of my favorite nights ever.”

“A Brooklyn Rooftop” follows the band’s previously released debut track “The Santa Margarita,” which pays tribute to fallen friend Tony Sly (No Use For A Name) and features guest vocals byDave Hause.

Versus The World will be performing two album release shows in Southern California before heading to Europe for a tour with Strung Out in late June and July.

VERSUS THE WORLD frontman DONALD SPENCE to Release Solo EP “The Late Shift” via Hardline Entertainment.

Hardline Entertainment is proud to announce the upcoming release of “The Late Shift”, the debut solo EP from Versus the World frontman Donald Spence. Out March 4th, the EP will be a collection of stripped-down songs that highlight the singer-songwriter’s gifts for melody and story telling.

Spence has spent the last few years touring the globe with his band Versus the World (whose members include The Ataris’ Michael Davenport and Lagwagon’s Chris Flippin) in support of their latest release Drink. Sing. Live. Love. Despite the bands hectic touring schedule, Spence’s creative energy hasn’t slowed down a bit, and the “The Late Shift” is a document of the ups and downs of a life lived for art.

The EP also represents a bit of a departure for Spence, as he eschews the post-punk for which Versus the World is known, instead taking his cues from Americana, alt country, and rock and roll. The resulting collection of songs featuring the title track “The Late Shift”, Donald sings about living and loving in the working class world, “Forever the poor boys, drinking bottom shelf with the rest of the working stiffs. What ever keeps that fire lit.” Lamenting that sometimes working to just get by is more than enough. With the track “Don’t it Show”, Spence writes about the life that doesn’t stop when you leave on tour. The relationships and the world that refuse to quit turning just because you left the country. “The great healer and killer of all things. We’re all doing time.”

Donald Spence and Hardline Entertainment have teamed up to release “The Late Shift” just in time for Spence and Versus the World’s stint on The Ataris “So Long Astoria” reunion tour (which will also feature support from Authority Zero and Drag the River). Spence will also be lending his services on guitar, keyboards and backing vocals on stage with The Ataris.

AUTHORITY ZERO & VERSUS THE WORLD to Support The Ataris-‘So Long, Astoria’ Reunion Tour!

[fblike]4-band-support
For the first time in a decade, the classic lineup of The Ataris will reconvene to perform their million-selling album, So Long, Astoria, in its entirety from start to finish.   For one tour only, Kristopher Roe, Mike Davenport, Chris Knapp and John Collura will share the stage to celebrate their beloved album, performing fan-favorite hits like “So Long, Astoria,” “The Saddest Song” and their iconic version of Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer.”  Support will include: Authority Zero, Drag The River, Versus The World and Gasoline Heart.  Tickets for the upcoming tour will go on sale to the public on December 20th.

In conjunction with today’s tour announcement, The Ataris has released part one of a new mini-documentary about the band’s reunion and the making of So Long, Astoria.  Watch it now, exclusively at Billboard.com.  http://bit.ly/1dkWcOE.
Formed in 1996, The Ataris went on to sell hundreds of thousands of albums on small independent label Kung Fu Records before signing to Columbia Records in 2001.  In 2003, the band released their career-defining album, So Long, Astoria, which sold over a million copies and spawned the hits, “In this Diary,” “The Saddest Song” and “Boys of Summer.”

After headlining multiple Warped Tours and selling out major tours of their own, the classic line-up of The Ataris disbanded in 2004, leaving behind a legacy of influence and rock-radio anthems that still live on today.

A decade later, that lineup will reunite for one tour to celebrate So Long, Astoria, an album that helped redefine punk rock in the early 2000’s with vivid confessionals and melodic heartfelt sing-alongs.

“I’m looking forward to going out and bringing these songs to a crowd and really giving it our all, and hopefully bringing some of these fun memories back to our fans,” singer/guitarist Kristopher Roe says.  “I really feel like the most important thing is to be reconnected with three of my old best friends.  I’m excited to go out and make music with them again.”

“It’s a lot of nostalgia to come back and do this tour,” guitarist John Collura adds.  “It’s a celebration of what the four of us accomplished as a band.”

“This tour, for me, means more of redemption,” concludes bassist Mike Davenport.  “Us four reunited again, performing what I think is one of our best albums.”

“I haven’t seen these guys in forever,” drummer Chris Knapp says.  “It’s going to be crazy.”
